You're installing a butcher block countertop and the last screw just stripped. Or you're repairing a stained glass window frame and the brass screw head turned into a smooth dome on your third turn. Either way, you're now deep in the world of "how to remove a stripped screw."
I'm not writing this as a theory piece. I spent six years doing kitchen and window restoration before moving into technical service at Eastman Chemical. Before You Grab a Tool, Check These Three Things

- What's the screw made of? Brass and aluminum strip easily and respond well to grip tricks. Stainless steel is tougher and usually needs drilling.
- What's the surrounding material? A butcher block countertop is hard maple or oak—dense, forgiving, and able to handle a drill. Soft pine window frames from old homes will splinter under pressure. Match your method to the wood.
- Is there a chemical bond involved? If the screw was installed with threadlocker or construction adhesive, heat and penetrating oil are your first move. Pulling harder just makes the head rounder.
Step 1: The Rubber Band Trick (No, Really)
I know, this sounds like social media nonsense. I thought the same thing for years. Then, in 2021, I was restoring a set of stained glass windows and a brass screw stripped out completely. Out of desperation, I stretched a wide rubber band over the screw head and pressed my driver in. It backed out in about 20 seconds.
The rubber fills the stripped void and gives the bit something to bite into. It works best on partially stripped screws in softer metals.
- Place a rubber band or a piece of nitrile glove over the screw head.
- Press the driver in with firm downward pressure. A manual screwdriver gives you more feel than a power tool.
- Turn slowly. If it slips, reposition and try again.
If it doesn't catch in 30 seconds, it's not going to. Move on.
Step 2: Left-Hand Drill Bit + Screw Extractor
This is the professional's method. It involves drilling a small hole into the stripped screw, then using a spiral extractor to bite into that hole and twist the screw out.
The overlooked trick is the left-hand drill bit. It cuts while rotating counterclockwise—the same direction as unscrewing. Sometimes the drilling action alone catches the screw and spins it out before you ever touch an extractor. Feels like magic the first time you see it.
- Center punch the screw head first. If you skip this (I've done it), the drill wanders and you'll scratch the surrounding wood. On a finished butcher block countertop, that scratch means refinishing the whole section.
- Start with a 1/8" left-hand bit. Drill into the center of the screw.
- Move up to a larger bit. Aim for about 75% of the screw shank's diameter. If you drill too wide, the extractor will have nothing to grip.
- Tap the extractor in and turn by hand. Use a tap handle or wrench, not a power drill. Extractors are hardened steel and brittle. When they snap, the game is over.
Which brings me to my most expensive lesson: I bought a cheap $8 extractor set online in 2020. Six weeks later, I used it on a stainless steel screw in a customer's door hinge. The extractor snapped off clean inside the screw. The broken extractor is harder than the screw, so drilling it out is effectively impossible. Buy the $25 set from a proper tool brand. Honestly, even that feels overpriced compared to the alternative.
Step 3: Heat and Penetrating Oil
Some screws strip because you're using too much force. Others strip because they're rusted or glued in place, and the head gives out under torque. For the second group, you need chemistry, not muscle.
- Use a soldering iron, not a torch—you're near wood, finish, and possibly glass. Touch the tip to the center of the screw head for 20–30 seconds.
- Apply penetrating oil (Kroil or Liquid Wrench work well). The heat expands the metal slightly; as it cools, the oil wicks into the gap between screw threads and wood.
- Wait five minutes. Then try the extractor again.
This is basic physics, and I'll admit I slept through part of that class. But at Eastman Chemical, thermal expansion and solvent penetration show up in nearly every product we make—adhesives, sealants, glass interlayers. Understanding them turns a hopeless screw extraction into a fifteen-minute exercise.
A warning about stained glass windows: don't use heat anywhere near the glass. The solder in lead came and copper foil panels melts at temperatures well within a soldering iron's range. You will wreck a panel and possibly start a fire. For window frames, skip heat and go straight to Step 4.
Step 4: Drill It Out and Patch It
If the screw head is gone, you're now authorized to destroy the screw—strategically. The goal is removing the body without damaging the wood around it.
For a butcher block countertop:
- Drill through the remaining screw with a bit matching the shank diameter. The head will pop off, and the countertop lifts free.
- Clamp the wood from below before drilling to prevent splitting. I skipped this once, and the resulting split on the underside ruined a beautiful oak installation.
- Drill the remaining shank out, working up in bit sizes (1/8", 3/16", 1/4").
- Patch the hole with a wooden dowel and glue. Match the species if you can—maple for maple, oak for oak. I keep maple dowels in my kit because most butcher block is maple.
- Once the glue cures, cut the dowel flush, sand flat, and drill a fresh pilot hole.
For a stained glass window frame, you need a lighter touch. Old frames are brittle, and the hardware might be structurally tied to the glass panels. If the stuck screw is in a load-bearing location—a hinge, a retainer clip supporting the panel—my honest advice is to call a historic window specialist. That fee is cheaper than a shattered stained glass panel.
Step 5: Know When to Stop
Here's a rule I adopted after the $380 extractor incident: if I'm not making progress after 20 minutes, I stop. I document the situation, take a breath, and switch to plan B.
Plan B options:
- Move the hinge or bracket half an inch to the side and drill new pilot holes. On a window frame, fill the old hole with a dowel first.
- Use a threaded insert (a brass sleeve that creates fresh threads in the wood). Common in furniture restoration.
- On countertops, mount from underneath with L-brackets or a support block. The visible surface stays untouched.
Choosing plan B isn't defeat. It's refusing to ruin a good piece of wood over one bad screw.
What NOT to Do
I've made each of these mistakes, so let me be direct:
- Don't use an impact driver. The hammering action rounds out the screw head faster and can split soft wood.
- Don't drive an extractor with a power drill. Extractors are not drill bits. They're for hand tools. Power tools deliver the exact torque shock that snaps them.
- Don't skip the center punch. A drill wanders. On a finished surface, a wandering drill leaves a mark that insurance doesn't cover.
- Don't use the wrong size driver. A #1 Phillips is not a #2. Using an undersized driver is how most partially stripped screws become fully stripped screws.
- Don't over-tighten the replacement screw. The original screw stripped because someone torqued it past its limit. Hand-tight plus a quarter turn is enough.
The 60-Second Checklist
- Identify screw metal, substrate, and access from the back.
- Rubber band or nitrile glove over the head, manual driver, firm pressure.
- No luck? Center punch, then try a left-hand drill bit. Let the bit do the work.
- Still stuck? Tap in a spiral extractor and turn by hand.
- Rusted or threadlocked? Heat with a soldering iron, apply penetrating oil, wait five minutes, retry.
- Head gone? Drill it out, patch with a dowel, or move the hardware.
- Hit 20 minutes? Stop. Reassess. You've always got plan B.
One final thought. In the field, I've noticed that most failures—stripped screws, failed adhesives, cracked glass—come down to a missing step, not a bad product. No pilot hole. Wrong driver size.
