I’m the person who says no before a bad product reaches a customer. I work for a mid-size building-products manufacturer, and I review every incoming material and finished batch before it ships. That’s roughly 60 items a month. In 2024, I rejected about 11% of first deliveries. The reasons weren’t always visible: coating adhesion, plasticizer odor, dimensional drift, or a batch where the supplier swapped a raw material without telling us.

It is in the chemical composition.
What I mean is that the cost of a component is not simply the cost of the component. It includes your inspection time, your rework rate, your warranty calls, and the quiet hit to your reputation when a product fails in someone’s home. A cheap tempered glass panel may have the right thickness and still contain nickel sulfide inclusions that make it more likely to break later.

Here is where I sound like the boring guy at the table. When I look up an Eastman Chemical company profile, I’m not checking revenue for entertainment. I’m checking what kind of material science the company actually controls.
Eastman is a specialty materials company headquartered in Kingsport, Tennessee, publicly traded as EMN. According to Eastman Chemical’s 2024 10-K, the company operates through advanced materials, additives and functional products, chemical intermediates, and fibers. For a building-products buyer, the useful part is that Eastman makes ingredients used in coatings, adhesives, sealants, plasticizers, and polymer compounds—many of which end up in construction materials like glass interlayers, shower hoses, and sensor housings.
That doesn’t mean every Eastman product is flawless. No supplier is. But the company profile tells me something relevant: process chemistry is their core business, not a side project.
From the Outside, Materials Look the Same. The Reality Is Different.
From the outside, a tempered glass panel is just glass. A shower head with hose is just plumbing. A garage door sensor is just a small electronic box. The reality is that each one depends on polymer grades, plasticizers, adhesion promoters, UV stabilizers, and corrosion-resistant compounds. If any of those are substituted with a cheaper upstream input, the final product can fail in ways that look unrelated.
That’s the surface illusion that drives me crazy. People assume the lowest quote means the vendor found a more efficient process. Sometimes it does. But sometimes it means a material was quietly swapped: a different plasticizer, a lower-molecular-weight polymer, a thinner coating layer on a connector. The quote looks better. The product lasts a little worse.
The $22,000 Lesson That Changed My Tempered Glass Spec
In 2022, we received a batch of 400 tempered glass panels for a residential project. The thickness was correct. The dimensions were correct. The edge quality looked fine. But the batch had not been properly heat-soaked, and the supplier didn’t document the nickel sulfide screening.
We rejected the batch. The vendor argued that it was “within industry standard” and that most buyers don’t ask for heat-soak documentation. That may be true. It also cost us a $22,000 redo and delayed the project by three weeks. A lesson learned the hard way.
Under ASTM C1048, fully tempered flat glass must meet specified surface compression requirements. That standard matters, but it doesn’t by itself guarantee that every pane is free of nickel sulfide inclusions. That’s where heat-soaking comes in. Now every glass contract includes heat-soak documentation. It adds cost. I should add that it also gives our legal team something concrete to point to if the vendor claims a failure was unavoidable.
The Board of Directors Check I Never Used to Make
The most overlooked part of supplier due diligence is not the spec sheet. It’s the eastman chemical board of directors list. I check it. I know that sounds like corporate voyeurism, but I have a reason.
A board sets the investment agenda. Look for corrosion at the terminals and damage to the wire insulation. In a garage, the wire insulation is exposed to moisture, temperature swings, and sometimes de-icing chemicals. Those are materials problems, not sensor problems.
Use the same logic when you specify building materials. Ask where the chemistry comes from. Ask for the upstream company profile. If you’re buying tempered glass, ask for heat-soak documentation. If you’re buying fixtures like a shower head with hose, ask what polymer grade is in the hose. If you’re buying sensors, ask about the connector housing material and the wire insulation rating.
You don’t need a Fortune 500 purchasing department to do this. When I started in this role, the vendors who took my $200 sample order seriously were the ones I still call for $20,000 orders. Small doesn’t mean unimportant—it means potential.
A Caveat Before You Copy This
This approach worked for us because we’re a mid-size building-products manufacturer with a small number of high-impact SKUs. If you’re a national contractor buying thousands of components through multiple distributors, the calculus is different. I can only speak to my context. Your mileage may vary if your supply chain is longer, your volumes are bigger, or your products are safety-critical in a different way.
If you take one thing from this, take this: The part number is not the product. The company behind the chemistry is part of the product. And the next time you see a cheap shower head with hose or a bargain tempered glass panel, ask what you’re actually buying upstream.
